SAG-AFTRA Seattle Local broadcast unit KING Television has been awarded a 2013 George Foster Peabody Award for their mult-part investigative series, “Hanford’s Dirty Little Secrets”. KING-TV reporter and SAG-AFTRA member Susannah Frame, along with photojournalist Steve Douglas and Executive Producer Russ Walker were tapped for the award, presented annually by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Grady School of Journalism, recognizing outstanding achievement in the field of reporting in electronic media.
The Nominating Committee announced its choice on the Awards web site, citing the team’s in-depth coverage: “Centering on a leaking nuclear-waste storage tank in Washington state, the Seattle station’s expose of mismanagement, deception and waste of tax dollars resulted in a full review of the Hanford nuclear ‘reservation’ by the U.S. Department of Energy and the company that manages the toxic site.” As a result of their efforts, the broadcasts “led to officials calling for investigations, the resignation of the investigated company’s president and the formation of a safety committee,” according to the KING-TV.
The Award was presented at the 73rd Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony held Monday, May 19, 2014 in New York City.
