The Latino Film Festival kicked off with a community-building event for creatives in the industry.
SAG-AFTRA was a proud sponsor of the annual New York Latino Film Festival’s Filmmakers Brunch on Sept. 18 at the Regal Union Square in Manhattan. Attendees heard remarks from festival founder Calixto Chinchilla and had opportunities to network with industry professionals.
SAG-AFTRA Vice President, New York and New York Local President Ezra Knight attended the brunch, and SAG-AFTRA National Latino Committee Vice Chair and New York Local Board member Vanessa Morales and members of the National Latino Committee represented the union at the festival.
The event, filled with positive, uplifting energy and accompanied by music and brunch fare, was an excellent kickoff to the festival, and the excitement among attendees was palpable. Knight’s address to the filmmakers in attendance emphasized the strength of diversity, and encouraged all professionals to collaborate with SAG-AFTRA, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to support the community.
Filmmakers participating in the festival briefly pitched their productions, showcasing a wide range of topics and genres that would be featured during the festival. Among those were the cast and crew of This Boy’s Vida, an independent film signed under the SAG-AFTRA Micro Budget Agreement.
Founded in 1999 by Chinchilla, the New York Latino Film Festival makes it its mission to cultivate audiences for Latino cinema, bolster the film community and facilitate collaborations within the entertainment industry, NYLFF facilitates screenings, panels and other live events. The 2024 film festival took place between Sept. 15–22.
