On Friday, September 7th 2012, Washington-Baltimore’s Associate Executive Director Jane Love and Contract Administrator Lois Seffu were panelists in a seminar for “Selecting the Right Actors” at the DC Shorts Film Festival. Also featured was DC area casting director Kimberly Skyrme. The seminar was attended by approximately 35 local and international filmmakers who were able to get firsthand knowledge on casting for films and how to work with SAG-AFTRA professionals. Festival Director Jon Gann invited SAG-AFTRA to lead the panel as part of their partnership with the festival this year.
Attending the seminar was producer Joel David Santner, who at last year’s festival, won the DC Shorts Screenwriting Competition and was awarded the funds to produce his film, Mirror Image, screened in this year’s festival. He produced his film under a SAG Short Film Agreement, saying that “SAG made it very easy to secure the talent of union actors, and the online signatory process made it very clear what my responsibilities were as a producer.”
The DC Shorts Film Festival and Screenplay Competition claims to be the largest short film event on the East Coast. In its Ninth year, 140 films from 27 nations were screened this year by hundreds of filmmakers and many others who mixed, mingled and explored the art of short cinema.
