The actors who bring Black Panther, This Is Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to life were some the big winners at the SAG Awards last night. Hosted by Megan Mullally, the 25th Annual SAG Awards at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles shone a light on the profession of acting and the talented men and women who entertain and move us.

In its milestone 25th year, the SAG Awards remains the only televised awards ceremony to exclusively honor performers, with the honorees chosen by their fellow union members. While the spotlight stayed focused on performers, presenters, honorees and attendees remained mindful that, through their collective voice and unity, SAG-AFTRA protects members and gives them a say in their working conditions.

“Though we are here to celebrate our art, we are also here to recognize the dignity and power of work,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris. “Whether it’s the latest film, commercial, TV show, hit single or news report, performers, like all workers, deserve fair wages, health care and pension. So, in honor of the working women and men across this nation and around the world, this is our moment.”

The top honorees in the Leading Role categories included Glenn Close, for her role in The Wife, and Rami Malek, for his performance in the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Another highlight of the evening was when Tom Hanks presented Alan Alda with the Life Achievement Award. Alda, who has found success in acting, directing and writing, as well as making his mark as a podcaster, philanthropist and educator, is the 55th recipient of the award, which is bestowed for outstanding achievement in fostering the finest ideals of the acting profession.

“When we get a chance to act, it’s our job, at least in part, to get inside a character’s head and to search for a way to see life from that person’s point of view … and then to let an audience experience that,” Alda said. “When a culture is divided so sharply, actors can help, at least a little. Just by doing what we do.”

While the stars sparkled on the anniversary-themed “silver carpet” at the Shrine, SAG-AFTRA members from all work categories joined in at viewing parties across the nation, taking the opportunity to mingle with their peers and see how their SAG Awards predictions fared.

Also, before the ceremony, the awards ambassadors Harry Shum Jr. (Crazy Rich Asians) and Sydney Sweeney (The Handmaid’s Tale) announced the honorees in the Stunt Ensemble categories, which were Black Panther and GLOW.
