The Only Labor Union Ever Honored With a Star

Los Angeles (May 10, 2007)-Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced today that it will receive an Award of Excellence star on Hollywood Boulevard from the Hollywood Historic Trust. SAG is the first labor union to receive this honor.

The Award of Excellence star is being presented to SAG in recognition of its significant contributions to actors and the entire entertainment community for nearly 75 years. Longtime SAG member and Hollywood's Honorary Mayor, Johnny Grant, will present the Award of Excellence star at an 11 a.m. ceremony on October 25, 2007, with prominent SAG members and elected leaders from around the country in attendance. The star will be placed on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

"The Award of Excellence star marks another pioneering moment in the remarkable and rich history of this union," SAG President Alan Rosenberg said. "For nearly 75 years, Screen Actors Guild has worked hard to improve the lives of actors, so it is an extraordinary honor for us to now be recognized with a star on Hollywood Boulevard, where we will be forever memorialized among the many actors who have helped make the Guild what it is today."

The ceremony will officially kick off the Guild's year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary, which takes place in 2008. Screen Actors Guild, which was founded on June 30, 1933, recently formed a 75th Anniversary Committee comprised of past SAG national presidents and chaired by Kathleen Nolan.

The Award of Excellence star will not be funded by member dues, but by contributions to the SAG Foundation, including a presenting sponsorship by Ford Motor Company that will feature hybrid vehicles to ferry guests to the celebration as part of the company's green initiative.

"The Screen Actors Guild Foundation is proud to partner with Ford in honoring Screen Actors Guild on their Award of Excellence star," SAG Foundation Executive Director Marcia Smith said. "The Foundation was established to benefit actors, and now with Ford's help, along with the generous contributions from Guild members and supporters, we are better able to promote acting and enhance the lives of all actors."

The Foundation is continuing to accept donations to help fund this celebration. Contributions can be made through the Foundation's Web site, www.sagfoundation.org. The funds will pay for the creation and installation of the star, as well as maintenance of the Walk of Fame. Any contributions not utilized to cover the cost of the star celebration will be used to help fund the many productive programs administered by the SAG Foundation.
