The SAG-AFTRA San Francisco-Northern California spring 2018 membership meeting was held April 16 at the Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco. As part of the pre-meeting events, Local President Kathryn Howell and Local Executive Director Sean Taylor headed up a brief orientation for new members and an eligible performer mixer, giving pre-members the opportunity to interact with SAG-AFTRA members and learn about the benefits of union membership.

The meeting opened with Howell’s remarks to the membership. Taylor then followed up with a slideshow presentation that offered informative details, including a list of recent productions filmed in the area, member traffic into and out of the San Francisco-Northern California Local, and news about broadcast negotiations and events.

The local hosted Associate Commercials Strategist Shaine Griffin, who gave a special presentation on the #AdsGoUnion commercial organizing campaign. Launched in 2015, this member-led campaign is aimed at recapturing non-union commercial work and enforcing contracts with signatory producers who try to produce non-union ads. Griffin presented information on the current state of the industry, the low budget digital waiver and what members can do to actively participate in the campaign. Members were encouraged to post on social media with the hashtag #AdsGoUnion and talk with pre-members, fellow members and agents about regional commercials codes available in the locals.

This meeting was the first of two annual meetings traditionally held in April and October. The San Francisco-Northern California Local encourages all of its members to attend future membership meetings as we come together in solidarity to discuss issues pertaining to our members and partners in the community.
