The Conservatory Committee of the New Orleans Local sponsored a free social media workshop titled The Social Media Advantage at the offices of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 174-496 on Oct. 14, 2018. Taught by actor and casting agent Ryan Walker, the workshop provided a look at how this evolving digital age requires performers to have a social media presence incorporated into their daily lives to create a competitive advantage to find work. The workshop was attended by approximately 30 SAG-AFTRA members, reported George Sanchez, New Orleans Local Board member.

The key to a successful social media presence is to reach the greatest number of people. Large platforms such as Facebook and Instagram will get you the broadest exposure, but it is also crucial to have a personal website. There are several areas to consider as you create your online presence:

•    Branding. How do you see yourself? How do others see you? How do you want to be seen? You need to highlight your skills, hobbies, travel and work experiences other than performing. Make yourself valuable as an interesting commodity. The online community that you build — your followers — are what people who will potentially hire you see.

•    Quality. Photos that you post need not be taken by a professional photographer. However, you should use a good-quality camera. Even a cell phone or tablet with a higher-quality camera can take very usable photos, especially when you use one of the many available photo-editing apps. A built-in Wi-Fi connection allows you to post directly to your accounts after editing with your mobile device. The key is to take interesting, well-composed pictures that present you as you want to be seen.

•    Consistency. Attention spans are short! Facebook, Instagram and Twitter deal with such high volumes of posts that posting every two to four days is necessary to keep your message in front of the people you want to reach. This is especially true on your website, where you control the content.

•    Simplicity. Keep it simple to create an efficient, positive presence. A headshot and a bio or list of credits are needed, of course, but also include the area where you live and work to make it easier to contact you. Do not limit yourself in your appeal! These platforms allow you to have an international reach.

Social media is a tool you can use to boost your connections and career, and we thank Ryan Walker for sharing his expertise with New Orleans Local members, added Sanchez.
