I would say [learning how to edit] has actually helped me with my performance overall. Now that I know what editors have to go through and their limitations ... I think I give a better performance on set and even when auditioning because I know how I can [make adjustments] so my continuity is accurate.

Continuing its Smartphone Studio series, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted Smartphone Studio II: Getting Started in Post-Production with Final Cut Pro on Jan. 21. Aubrey Mozino, vice chair of the Los Angeles Local NextGen Performers Committee and president of We Make Movies, returned with Sam Mestman, chief executive officer of We Make Movies and the founder of tech firm Lumaforge

The presentation involved a demonstration of Final Cut Pro, a popular post-production software program. Many of the topics included instructions on downloading clips from a smartphone, important program features and tools, how-tos on making color and sound adjustments, and how to export video. Mozino and Westman also answered questions from members about editing.

“I would say the reason why [our company] loves Final Cut is because it has professional applications as an editing suite,” said Mozino, noting the popularity of the application within the industry.

Added Mestman, “I would really recommend going easy on yourself and giving yourself a couple of days to learn the program. Try not to be perfect … and keep it very, very simple with a couple of small projects. Once you’re successful, the learning curve lessens over time.”
