Every SAG-AFTRA member is entitled to designate one member category that best represents them. There are seven, nationally-consistent member categories established by the National Board, as follows:
- Actor/Performer
- Singer
- Dancer
- Stunt Performer
- Broadcast/News & Information
- Broadcast/Entertainment
- Recording Artist
Background performers are currently part of the Actor/Performer member category.
The selection of a member category does not affect dues or a members' ability to work under any SAG-AFTRA agreement. Member categories are used administratively for union elections and governance purposes, including allocating Board seats.
