Blood industry officials made a plea this week for blood donations, citing the "current high risk of a life-threatening" shortage in many parts of the country, including the Midwest and Southern California. On that urgent note, it’s time for another Screen Actors Guild blood drive. Please consider scheduling an appointment to make a life saving gift (guidelines for blood donations are listed below).
All members nationwide are invited to take part in the SAG Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registry.
Members in Southern California can schedule an appointment for July 16 at the SAG National headquarters. For more information on the Hollywood blood drive, please refer to the Hollywood branch page.
In addition to donating a pint of blood, please consider registering for the National Bone Marrow registry. SAG member Martin Milner’s (Adam 12 and Route 66) daughter has been battling acute leukemia and her only chance for survival is to find a bone marrow match. Milner says. “But even if we don’t find a match for Amy, the people who join the bone marrow registry could potentially save someone else’s life…and that’s important.”
Blood donations and bone marrow registry can be made at any American Red Cross Blood Donor Center. If you'd like to become a potential donor for Amy Milner, tell the agent at the American Red Cross Blood Donor Center the donation is being made for patient AM05.
Anyone between the ages of 18 and 60, who is in good health, may be eligible to join the National Marrow Donor Program registry as a volunteer donor. The blood test to join the registry involves a very small blood sample and just a few extra minutes. The City of Hope Hospital and UCLA Blood & Platelet Center are underwriting/sponsoring this bone marrow registry drive.
