It was with great pleasure that the SAG-AFTRA Washington – Mid Atlantic Local joined with the AFL-CIO, the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO and Helmets to Hardhats in this year’s campaign for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. While the total donation count amongst all of the organizations in the campaign is still being calculated, it is estimated that the Washington–Mid Atlantic Local raised thousands of dollars in toys and monetary donations.
To bolster efforts during this campaign, the Local held a holiday open house on Wednesday, Dec. 12 encouraging members to bring a new, unwrapped toy while touring the local office, meeting staff, chatting with fellow members, and enjoying some tasty treats. Thank you to everyone who attended the open house and brought a donation.
Also, our hats go off to the local SAG-AFTRA members and IBEW members alike at WUSA 9 in collecting toys for this worthy cause. Santa came in the form of Local Board member and shop steward Bruce Leshan when Bruce delivered a significant contribution of toys to the Local office from union members at WUSA 9.
On Friday, Dec. 14, members and staff of the organizations involved in the Toys for Tots campaign gathered together at the International Pipe Trades Joint Training Committee warehouse to load a tractor trailer full of toys and bikes for Local area children. The U.S. Marines were in attendance for the handoff of the donations.
We would like to thank the Washington–Mid Atlantic Local Board, shop stewards, staff, and every member who made a donation for their support and participation during this campaign. Through the kindness and generosity of the Local and our partners, we have given the gift of joy and cheer to many local children this holiday season.
Thank you and happy holidays!
