SAG-AFTRA’s most glamorous annual event, the SAG Awards, rocked the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles Sunday night for its 26th show. The soiree put union actors squarely in the spotlight, celebrating the year’s outstanding performances.

SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris welcomed viewers and attendees, thanked fellow unions and spoke about the importance of art during times of crisis and change.

“Tonight as we lift our eyes to the larger world around us, we must recognize, as a community and a country, how important it is to listen to each other and to speak our truths, not only in our stories but in our lives,” she said. “Those truths are laid bare in the extraordinary work we celebrate tonight.”

The awards are the ultimate sign of respect in the acting profession, since honorees are selected by fellow union members. The South Korean film Parasite was chosen for the honor of Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture, while for television, the casts of The Crown and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took the awards in the drama and comedy series categories.

Robert De Niro was the toast of the town as the 56th SAG Life Achievement honoree. The award celebrated not only the indelible mark he has made on the entertainment industry, but also his history of philanthropy and activism. Leonardo DiCaprio, De Niro’s co-star in the films Marvin’s Room and This Boy’s Life, presented the accolade to the legendary performer.

“I thank SAG-AFTRA for tirelessly fighting on our behalf for workplace and economic gains and respect, and that especially bears remembering these days when there’s so much hostility towards unions,” he said.

During the official preshow, recipients were announced in the Stunt Ensemble categories for film and television. Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones took the honors.
