SAG-AFTRA continues its support of the FAIR Act for members and California workers.
For decades, actors and recording artists in California have been denied the freedom and flexibility to pursue a paycheck by outdated and unfair employment contracts. Actors are unilaterally held off the market for extended periods of time by production studios, and recording artists are kept in long-term contracts that are virtually impossible to leave. SAG-AFTRA continues to pursue legislation for actors, recording artists, and all California workers that would end these restrictions and allow people to make a living. The 2022 Free Artists from Industry Restriction, or “FAIR,” Act clarifies that workers have a right to work multiple jobs, and specifically allows artists to work for multiple employers when they are not scheduled to work for their original employers. This bill will open new earning opportunities for actors, recording artists and all Californians.
SAG-AFTRA has worked to find a new bill champion, Assembly member Ash Kalra, D-San Jose. Kalra is the chair of the Committee on Labor and Employment. The FAIR Act was recently introduced, so stay tuned for more updates and calls to action.
