Los Angeles (April 30, 2007)—–The Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation today announced the appointment of Valerie Harper to the Foundation Board. The Board of Directors is the policy-making body that oversees the programs and charitable functions of the Foundation.

A veteran of stage, television and film, Harper’s career has taken her to Radio City Music Hall, Broadway, Second City and numerous television and film appearances, resulting in four Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. She is best known for her work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda.

“I’ve always had great feelings about the Foundation,” Harper said. “I’m overjoyed to join my colleagues on the Foundation Board, particularly Executive Director Marcia Smith, who works with the same tireless creativity an actor would in the service of actors.”

A member of the Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors since 2000, Harper has a long history of community service. Since the 1980s she has worked with such organizations as LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone), a community-activated food distribution program in Los Angeles she co-founded with Dennis Weaver. In addition, she is involved with The Smartz Company, Save the Children, AFRICARE, OXFAM, RESULTS, The Rape Foundation and HOUSING NOW! In addition, Harper was a key participant in generating attention and support for the historic World Summit for Children held at the United Nations in 1990, where 71 heads of state met to address the desperate conditions of children all over the world.
