I think the most important thing needed when discussing the ethics of screen time and its manipulations is to de-link the subject [of] quality entertainment and branding, and the communal experience, from a singular experience on your phone.

Rebecca Damon

SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President

The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement and The Female Quotient hosted How the Next Generation Is Reclaiming Its Attention, and What It Means for Entertainment & Brands on March 2. SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President, New York Local President and National Innovation & New Technology Committee Chair Rebecca Damon spoke on the panel, which originally aired as a livestream for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Other panelists included The Social Dilemma co-producer Stacey Picullel and Vicki Lins, chief executive officer and president of marketing organization CTAM. Rhonda Carnegie, chief innovation officer of The Female Quotient, moderated.

The panel discussed the attention economy and its influence on culture and society, as well as how direct and prolonged exposure to content on technological platforms poses a threat to children. Among topics explored were effective means of changing society’s understanding and interaction on social sites, and the necessity of there being more regulation that protects minors’ exposure to content. Additionally, the group discussed how entertainment brands and streaming platforms can help provide tools parents can use to protect their children and encourage more socialization.
