The annual Audio Publishers Association Conference, always well attended by SAG-AFTRA members who work in audiobooks, convened at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City on May 28. The professional association is made up of both publishers and audiobook narrators, and the conference represents a valuable opportunity for narrators to network with potential employers, learn about the latest developments in the field, and connect with their colleagues. With so many SAG-AFTRA narrators flying into New York from all over the country to attend the conference, the union took the opportunity to hold its second national narrator meeting the following day on May 29. Attended by some 80 narrators, the meeting, held in the SAG-AFTRA New York office, engendered a lively discussion on contract priorities for a number of upcoming audiobook negotiations. Passionate about both audiobook narration and unionism, SAG-AFTRA narrators are a powerful force within their industry, responsible for the current high level of union density among audiobook publishers that affords excellent wages, working conditions, and health and retirement benefits for our members.
