On April 15, SAG-AFTRA’s National Women’s Committee sponsored the Women+Film screening of the dramatic feature film Monica. With Trace Lysette in the title role, this quiet and thought-provoking film tells the story of a woman estranged from her family, called home as her mother, played by Patricia Clarkson, nears death. It is the first feature to cast a trans leading lady.
Women+Film, part of Denver Film’s year-round programming, celebrates outstanding cinema by and about women. Festival founder Barbara Bridges, who recently announced her retirement, said, “With the growing focus on the underrepresentation of women in the film industry, especially women with diverse backgrounds, the festival is an important platform to shine the light on women working behind the scenes to create change.”
“We’re thrilled, not only to bring the best in woman-centric global cinema right to Denver, but also to collaborate with a variety of woman-owned and woman-led local businesses,” said Denver Film Programming Manager Ambriehl Turrentine. “This ultimate goal of our festival is to celebrate and strengthen our connection to film itself and our own community.”
The Colorado Local appreciates the support of the National Women’s Committee in sponsoring this excellent connection with Denver Film. The opportunity to see the work of women on and behind the scenes cannot be overstated.
