National Association of Black Journalists Detroit Chapter President, SAG-AFTRA member and reporter Vickie Thomas was honored with the prestigious President’s Award from NABJ National President Sarah Glover at the association’s 2018 convention in Detroit on Aug. 4.
Bringing the NABJ convention to Detroit has been a six-year labor of love for Thomas, a longtime shop steward who has been a reporter in Detroit since 1991. Among the highlights of the conference, which took place Aug. 1–5, were SAG-AFTRA panels discussing broadcast contracts and diversity in Detroit’s civic, professional and business life as well as in the media.
Also honored was Beverly White, a SAG-AFTRA shop steward from KNBC-Los Angeles. White received the Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is given to a journalist with at least 15 years of experience and a track record of extraordinary contributions to the enrichment, understanding and advancement of black life and culture.
