On-Camera Audition Techniques Workshop with Caryn West

Join Caryn West as she teaches and discusses a thorough, yet practical approach to the on-camera audition. Her class includes hands-on activities and best practices garnered from producers and casting directors.

Workshop topics/activities include:

  • How streaming television has forever changed the landscape of television
  • The recessive close-up vs. theater acting
  • How to maximize social media and avoid potential pitfalls 
  • Stillness, breath work and how to discover your character’s secret
  • How to prepare a camera script audition 
  • On-camera exercise with 2-3 volunteers

Caryn West is an award-winning actor and teacher and has been selected in both Los Angeles and New York as one of “The Best Audition Coaches” in polls conducted by Backstage magazine. West devised this course over 20 years ago based on her clients’ and her experiences. Because of the constant change within the entertainment industry, this class continues to evolve to stay relevant and meet the needs of the performer. As an actor, West auditions regularly and continues to perform. She recently appeared with Academy Award nominees Lena Olin and Bruce Dern in the upcoming  feature film The Artist’s Wife and the film The Way You Look Tonight currently in post-production. She has taught at prestigious academic programs on both coasts including: USC, American Conservatory Theatre, Cal Arts, Strasberg Institute, Stanford University and Temple University.

YAT MALMGREN TECHNIQUE: Training devised for actors to learn and explore, in-depth, the technique and system of psychological typology which brings together Laban and Stanislavsky and analyzes inner motivation and outer expression leading to the detailed and accurate construction of character. Giles Foreman will teach an introductory workshop, in the Yat Malmgren/Laban method, of transforming character. Developed by Yat Malmgren, founder of Drama Center London.

Tax Returns and the Working Actor Conservatory with Sandra Karas, Esq., Jan. 14

Confused or overwhelmed at tax time? Need help getting organized? Unclear on what is and isn’t deductible? The new tax law has brought changes to those in the entertainment industry. This live video small group conservatory, in conjunction with the New York Local MOVE Committee, will cover the new rules and help you prepare for the new filing season.

Sandra Karas

Acting for Military Veterans

Taught by Rachel Bailit, this workshop is designed for military veteran actors. In this workshop we will discuss the wonderful possibilities and rewards of being a military veteran actor. Topics will include:

  • Using your unique self and experiences as military veteran in your work
  • How to create a life to support your acting career.
  • Training and preparation to become an actor.
  • Marketing yourself as an actor and military veteran.
  • How to create authentically unique choices in auditions
  • "Warm Readings" How to warm-up a script making by making specific choices. Actors should bring a two copies of short scene (two pages maximum). Scenes will be exchanged and actors will have a chance to get up and read. Brief supportive feedback/suggestions will be given.

New Media Low Budget Contract Workshop 101

Are you interested in producing a New Media project with a budget less than $50,000, but don’t know where to start? Do you have questions regarding the rates, terms and conditions of the 2017 New Media Agreement? If you are creating a dramatic entertainment program for initial release on a new media platform, then this workshop is for you!

During this workshop, SAG-AFTRA staff will explain:

  • The intent and scope of the 2017 New Media Agreement;
  • Included rates, terms and conditions of the 2017 New Media Agreement;
  • Required signatory and productions documents;
  • The online signatory process; and
  • Additional information required when submitting an application for a New Media project.

This workshop is free and open to anyone interested in producing entertainment content for new media. Please note you do not have to be a SAG-AFTRA member to attend. Seating is limited and RSVP’s are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. If you sign up for the workshop but cannot attend you must cancel your reservation no later than 24 hours before the event.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The New Media Agreement does not apply to commercials, interactive games or programs that will have an initial release in traditional media (Network TV, Basic Cable, Pay TV, DVD, Theatrical, etc.). These types of projects are signed under other SAG-AFTRA Agreements. For information on these other SAG-AFTRA agreements, please contact the respective SAG-AFTRA department.
