Learn more about how SAG-AFTRA is fostering relationships with talent representatives and ensuring members are safe from harmful practices.

Be smart about how you reach out to professional representatives, and don’t just sign with the first person. See how you like each other before you make a contractual commitment. That’ll give you a better understanding on if you’re able to work with each other long-term.

Zino Testa-Macaluso

SAG-AFTRA National Director/Senior Counsel, Professional Representatives

Obtaining talent representation is an important goal for many performers, and a key aspect of taking their career to the next level. But, for many, understanding the different roles various representatives play can be confusing at times. It’s also important to be aware of exploitative or otherwise harmful business practices that some may utilize to prey upon their clients.

To further inform members about the union’s important work monitoring and regulating the work of talent representatives, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted You’ve Joined SAG-AFTRA, Now What? Finding Representation on May 16 with  SAG-AFTRA National Director/Senior Counsel, Professional Representatives Zino Testa-Macaluso.

Testa-Macaluso gave a breakdown of the three different types of talent representation performers often work with in the industry: talent agencies, managers and attorneys. In addition to explaining their different roles, the presentation expanded on SAG-AFTRA’s requirements for franchisement and the rules and policies that monitor franchised talent reps and ensure members’ protection from exploitation.

Following the presentation was a Q&A session where Testa-Macaluso spoke about best practices in finding representation.
