Former SAG-AFTRA Miami Local President Steve Gladstone received the local’s highest union service honor, the McLaughlin-Zimet Union Spirit Award, during a special ceremony at the local’s annual membership meeting on Nov. 18. SAG-AFTRA National Board member Nancy Duerr and Dave Corey, former national board member for legacy SAG and inaugural award recipient, presented Gladstone with the honor.
Gladstone became a member of SAG in 1979, and over time, also joined the local chapter of AFTRA. As president of SAG’s Florida branch for over 15 years, he promoted the organizational and consolidation efforts that helped lead to a successful merger of SAG and AFTRA in 2012. Soon after, he was elected as the first president of the SAG-AFTRA Miami Local.
Throughout his career, he has helped to advance unionism, diversity and equality on national negotiating committees. As vice-chair of the National Diversity Advisory Committee, he continues to fight fiercely for equality for women, seniors and disabled performers.
The McLaughlin-Zimet Union Spirit Award is respectively named after legacy SAG and AFTRA pioneers Bruce McLaughlin and Connie Zimet.
