On Sept. 4, 2023, Arizona labor unions had a picnic at Kennedy Park in Tucson sponsored by the Pima Area Labor Federation. Several SAG-AFTRA members from the Arizona-Utah Local attended, including Southern Arizona Local Vice President Mike Caprio, Michael Candela, Lela Hough, Lydia Martinez, Vic Roych, Matt Welch, Vernon Walker and family members.
Shannon Foley, president of IATSE Local 415, graciously let us share their tent. Other unions represented included AFSCME; International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; IBEW; National Writers Union; Teamsters; Southwest Carpenters; United Association of Plumbers, Fitters, Welders & Service Techs; and more.
Despite an extremely hot day over 100 degrees, it was very well attended. Hot dogs, coleslaw, soft drinks, water, nachos, chips and ice cream were abundant. Members enjoyed connecting with fellow SAG-AFTRA members as well as the solidarity of our union siblings, and Caprio talked with several elected officials about the issues facing SAG-AFTRA members.
