SAG-AFTRA’s elected leaders, members and staff from both the Broadcast and EEO & Diversity departments participated in five journalism conferences this summer and fall. Among them were gatherings organized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalist Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Asian American Journalist Association, and the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association. SAG-AFTRA also had a presence at the Excellence in Journalism conference in Baltimore.

Beverly White, a SAG-AFTRA shop steward from KNBC-Los Angeles, was honored with the Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Detroit in August. In addition, Vickie Thomas, shop steward from WWJ news radio in Detroit, was presented the President’s Award.

The conferences were held around the county and SAG-AFTRA staff provided professional advice on working as a broadcaster at a union station, personal service contract review and offered best practices for tackling diversity issues in the workplace.
