How SAG-AFTRA members can address and confront discrimination on the job.
The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement presented Know Your Rights: Discrimination in the Workplace on Nov. 29. Co-hosting alongside SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair was SAG-AFTRA Vice President, New York Ezra Knight, with SAG-AFTRA Equity & Inclusion Executive Director Franklin Sablan as presenter.
Sablan’s presentation provided an overview of employment discrimination, first defining the term and then citing common scenarios performers may experience while working. From there, he gave an overview of anti-harassment laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal and state laws. The presentation concluded with information on the anti-discriminatory provisions of SAG-AFTRA’s collective bargaining agreements as well as steps members should take to inform employers and the union when they experience discrimination.
In the Q&A session that followed, Whitehair, Knight and Sablan answered questions about how SAG-AFTRA works to support and advise members who choose to report instances of workplace discrimination.
“Visit SAG-AFTRA’s extensive library of information and resources available as it relates to discrimination, and remember that you don’t have to endure this type of behavior. SAG-AFTRA is very much here to offer support and assistance,” said Whitehair.
