Why should a member want to be covered under a SAG AFTRA podcast agreement? The most important answer, I think, is the protection. You know that … if you’re being hired to appear on a podcast, having a union contract means that you can be secure in the knowledge that the union has your back and will enforce the terms of your agreement.

The world of podcasts has quickly grown to offer new opportunities for creatives to develop, produce and distribute new and innovative content. In order to be better able to meet the rising demands of today’s podcasters, many of whom are SAG-AFTRA members, the union has developed two new podcast agreements: the Micro-Monetized Podcast Agreement and the Independent Podcast Agreement.

To talk more about the agreements and the rising popularity of podcasting, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted The New Podcasts Contracts panel on June 27. SAG-AFTRA National Director, Contracts Initiatives and Podcasts Sue-Anne Morrow, led a presentation on the new services available for podcasters, how to become signatory under the agreements and member benefits under both contracts and was later joined by SAG-AFTRA Manager, Contract Strategic Initiatives & Podcasts Shaine Griffin, who interviewed longtime member and podcaster Matt Marr (The Reality Gays with Mattie & Poodle). Marr discussed his foray into the podcasting industry and how this work has transformed his career.
