There are times on set when a background performer needs to file a claim. Those events may range from damaged or stolen property to unpaid wages and role upgrades. That’s why it’s essential to know when it’s necessary to file a claim, how to complete inquiry forms in a timely manner and the ways the union helps its members with the claim inquiry process.
The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted Get Paid What You’re Owed: A Background Actor’s Guide to Filing a Claim Inquiry on April 11. Alongside SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair, who hosted the session, was SAG-AFTRA National Director of Background & New York Entertainment Contracts Stephanie Perry.
In her presentation, Perry outlined details of the process, including the 30-day deadline for filing, and nuances to be aware of when completing the inquiry form. She also demonstrated where members can file a claim electronically on sagaftra.org.
In the Q&A portion that followed, she and Whitehair answered FAQs and advised members on ways to keep track of their records and navigate interactions with production.
