Dear Member,

I am writing to give all Philadelphia Local members an update on recent organizational challenges and how we are responding as a union.

As leaders of this union, our goal is to ensure the survivability and viability of this organization for future members; in other words, we will survive this. 

Unfortunately, this means taking steps to address our expenses, not just for this fiscal year but the next few years as well. As you are aware, our dues system is based on the prior year’s earnings. Not only is revenue down this year because so much union work has been on hold, but we can expect revenue to stay lower next fiscal year as well. Therefore, in addition to looking hard at every single line-item expense, we’ve also had to look at staffing cutbacks nationally, including here in Philadelphia.

While staff reductions are a necessity, the core functions of the union continue, such as supporting national, regional and local contracts for all our members.

Member Dues Relief Extension
We understand that members continue to face serious financial distress during this period. Therefore, the National Board has approved a second COVID-19 Dues Relief Extension program that allows members to defer their dues payment. This program will once again provide a mechanism whereby members in financial distress can easily request — either online or by simply checking a box on the dues bill — an extension of the due date for payment of dues and an installment plan for those payments. All members, whether or not they request a dues extension, will benefit from a waiver of late fees for this dues period. For more information about this, click HERE.
