Local members dove into their work at the Portland Conservatory Committee’s workshop on April 6: an audition clinic led by veteran casting director Lisa Beach.
Beach (Logan, Horrible Bosses, Hawaii Five-0, School Ties, Scream) is an Artios Award-winning casting director with more than 30 years of experience. After a personable 45-minute lecture on what she likes to see in auditions, actors were able to perform brief prepared scenes and then apply Beach’s notes in subsequent takes. “Leave your ego at the door,” “Less is more” and “Don’t act, just be!” were just a few of many the actionable recommendations — complete with examples — that helped enhance each actor’s performance during the workshop.
Beach was incredibly kind, enthusiastic, and constructively honest, and was thoroughly impressed with the Portland talent present. It was a phenomenal opportunity for each actor to learn and work on their craft, as well as show why Portland will continue to grow and develop as an ideal place for film and TV production.
Member Cyndi Rhoads expressed her appreciation for the Conservatory’s work, saying, “Thank you, Portland Conservatory Committee and the talented Lisa Beach! It was a grounded, practical, yet exciting workshop.”
New Portland Local member Jared Kasowski was equally ecstatic, saying, “Lisa’s clinic was such a joy to be a part of. Her energy and passion for her work is contagious and her willingness to share her wisdom about auditions from the casting director’s point of view was priceless. Attending this event will make it much easier to leave my ego at the door the next time I walk into an audition and allow me to be free enough to just play. Thank you, again. I look forward to attending many more great events in the future.”
Stay tuned for more Conservatory events in 2019!
