Nicole Izanec

Philadelphia Members,

It is a new year that brings new opportunities and a look at some advancements and accomplishments we achieved as a union. From fighting to help unionize broadcast stations to our efforts to eliminate sexual harassment and abuse, we collectively have helped move the dial on progress. We held our fifth biennial national convention as a union virtually, elected new leadership and worked collaboratively with our sister unions on evolving safety protocols. In February, the national Commercials Contracts negotiations began. There is much to be proud of in our continuing efforts as a union. Onward, there is also still much to be done.

A new year also brings with it the reality that we continue to persist through a global pandemic. We have, as a union, in some ways, lived separate realities during parts of this pandemic. Broadcasters were tried on the front lines, as the news cycle stopped for no one. Prioritizing the safety of our members became paramount to continuing to cover the day-to-day happenings of our strange new world. Their willingness to be out there in such dangerous and challenging times has been a testament to our strength and perseverance as a local. Performers faced other great challenges, as productions faced intermittent shutdowns for months. It was a long and trying period of separation and industry wide shutdowns for performers. This took a toll, both economically and emotionally, for our union, as many members were unexpectedly out of work. As we navigated safe ways to reopen and continue forward, it would be remiss not to acknowledge what a difficult and arduous process it has been for many members who are still struggling. I understand that it’s been a long process of getting back to work. As we recover and learn to adapt, I believe there’s a renaissance on the horizon.

The song Auld Lang Syne that is sung at the beginning of a new year sings of old times, especially times fondly remembered, and an old or long friendship. Many of us miss in-person gatherings. I miss gathering with all of you and look forward to the times fondly remembered when we can do so again. We are learning together, and as the year progresses, it’s my hope that virtual events will transition back into face-to-face conversations.

In the meantime, It becomes more important than ever to connect.

We are very much here for you to discuss union-related issues and topics in our local. If you would like to chat or just drop a line to say hello, send me a message at philadelphia.president@sagaftra.org.

We may not always know what lies ahead, but we are better together. Always. Let’s rebuild, but better.

In unity,

Nicole Izanec
