Join five SAG-AFTRA performers (Courtney Rioux, Tania Richard, Dana Black, Bobby Richards, and Michael Turrentine) as they sit down to discuss the why, when, and how they each created and work on their own podcasts.

PANELISTS INCLUDE:

DANA BLACK - Dana Black is the host and creator of I Swear on My Mother’s Grave podcast, which launched in August 2020. She is a TV/film/voiceover/stage actor, and film producer based in Chicago. She grew up in the suburbs outside Chicago, and attended Skidmore College, in upstate New York…many years ago. She has performed on stages across Chicago including Steppenwolf, Northlight, Timeline Theatre, Raven, Jackalope, Lifeline, American Blues, Steep and About Face, where she was nominated for an Equity Jeff Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has also performed on stages in Key West and in Fayetteville, Arkansas. TV credits include Chicago Med, Empire, Inferno, Proven Innocent and Hot Date. Dana also helped run and coordinate an arts mentorship program in Chicago for 2 years that worked to create pathways to bring women and non-binary artists into full and equal participation in the arts. She is a graduate of The School at Steppenwolf in Chicago, and is a proud SAG-AFTRA union member represented by Grossman & Jack Talent Agency. 

TANIA RICHARD - Tania recently appeared in School Girls; or the African Mean Girls Play at The Goodman Theatre. She has performed on Broadway, with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, The Court Theatre, The Second City, among others. She is currently the producer and host of Tania’s Take: race, culture and the culture of race.Tania is an Antiracism Educator and has led antiracism training for Fortune 500 Companies, tech start ups, non-profit organizations, universities, theatres and Presidential Campaigns. Her video series A Minute on Racism is on Facebook. She’s a published author and an award-winning playwright. She has appeared on Chicago Fire, Chicago Justice, Chicago PD, Empire, Proven Innocent, The Chi, Work in Progress as well as multiple commercials. Tania has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, The Story, OUT CHICAGO, The Chicago Tribune and on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight speaking on issues of culture, race, equity and inclusion.

BOBBY RICHARDS - Bobby Richards is the podcast producer for Business Made Simple. Each week the show reaches 150,000 business professionals and entrepreneurs with over 16 million lifetime downloads. Bobby is also a proud SAG/AFTRA member working as a VO talent most recently for campaigns including Nintendo, CDW, Cox Communications and the Food and Drug Administration. He lives in Nashville with his wife, two children and overwhelming Star Wars collection.

COURTNEY RIOUX - Courtney Rioux is the creator and host of The Whole Artist with Courtney Rioux Podcast: Conversations with Artists about Acting, Purpose, and The Journey to Finding Wholeness. You may have seen her as Paramedic Courtney on six seasons of NBC's Chicago Med, seen her as the Spokesperson for Hot Shot, in Marlyne Barrett's film, Haimerican, or heard her voice on a Jimmy Dean commercial. Courtney is also an advocate for actors. She coaches actors on mindset and emotional intelligence. Finally, she serves as VP of the Chicago SAG-AFTRA board. 

MICHAEL TURRENTINE - Michael Turrentine is an actor, writer, and activist. He originates from Oklahoma but has lived in Chicago for about 7 years now and loves it! He is also the host of the Podcast "How's Your Heart?" He has worked with theaters including Steppenwolf, The Lyric Opera, The Gift, American Theatre Company, Haven Theater Company, Remy Bumppo Theater Company, Griffin Theatre (where he received a Jeff Award Win for his performance in a supporting role) and many more. Michael also works as a Social Justice educator, bringing info and activism to Colleges and Military Structures around the Country. He is a Graduate in Acting from The University of Oklahoma and a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and AGMA. He is represented by Gray Talent Group.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Manny Herrera (SAG-AFTRA) is a veteran Producer/Director and Voice-Over instructor and motivator with 40 years of experience, a highly sought after AudioBook and Dubbing Producer.

In 2001, he became the first Director of Spanish-Language Rights Acquisitions for Recorded Books, LLC. Dubbed “the founding father” of RB’s AudioLibros imprint by executive producer Claudia Howard, he was responsible for the production of over 300 titles. Currently, he works at DuArt Media Services, producing Spanish Audiobooks for clients globally.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be fluent in Spanish.
  • Please come prepared with 2-3 pages of a book to read.  Please refrain from choosing religious texts.

SAG-AFTRA Foundation Presents: The Voiceover Lab Orientation

VO Lab programs and sessions are open to all SAG-AFTRA (and AEA) members and VO Lab Eligible performers that meet the requirements, regardless of your location or the VO Lab program's city of origin. 

Once you have completed the required Voiceover Lab Application (online), you must complete the Voiceover Lab Orientation (VOLO) in order to begin using the Lab. This 2-hour VOLO covers Lab policies, aspects of sound, file formats, sample rates/bit depths, audio interfaces, microphones, voiceover recording and editing demonstration using Twisted Wave software.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Participation in VO Lab programs is open to union members in good standing, regardless of your geographical location or a program's city of origin.
  • Join details are generally emailed to participants approx. 2-Hours (if not sooner) before the start time of the program.
  • Attendees must be present for the entire 2-hour program, which is from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (Pacific) / 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. (Eastern) in order to receive VO Lab eligibility. 
  • Ability to log into the program with a camera equipped computer or other mobile/portable device with a camera. Program will take place using Zoom.  
  • Completed VO Lab Application.
  • Valid/Current SAG-AFTRA or AEA membership card.
  • Note taking materials (laptop, pens, pencils, paper) recommended.

SAG-AFTRA Foundation Presents: Audacity 102: Record, Edit & Mix

Please note that this is not a beginner level class. it is the follow up to Audacity 101. Your understanding of and experience with Audacity will be crucial in this class. Participants must have the skills and ability to self-direct, self-record, self-edit and self-QC audio, so that ultimately they will be able to self-produce an audio commercial (with voice, music and sound effects) from start to finish using Audacity software.  Learning to mix various pieces of audio and understand the fundamentals of audio production are goals of this instruction. For the inspired, it will provide a blueprint on how to produce a voiceover demo. Take your skills to the next level in this 3-hour class.

REQUIREMENTS

If you participated in Audacity 102 on January 16, 2021, you are not eligible for this offering.

This is not a "learn to use Audacity" beginner class. Completion of Audacity 101 at the DLF VO Lab or experience using Audacity software is needed.  Prospective participants will be emailed additional questions and a skills assessment exercise by Wednesday,  January 6, 2021, so if you are on the RSVP or Waitlist be prepared for both.

Participants must be proficient using Audacity software for recording and editing audio.

Have Audacity downloaded onto your laptop computer.  THE URL: https://www.audacityteam.org  If you already have it ready to go on your computer there is no need to download it again.

Your computer will be needed to record, edit and mix audio throughout the class.

This class is 3-hours.  Participants must attend for the entire program 8 - 11 a.m. (Pacific) / 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Eastern).

These sessions provide a time to break down concepts into practical action items by which an actor can individually apply to their professional pursuits. This session will last for 1.5 - 2 hours. Participants must stay for the whole time.
