Union leaders discuss the challenges essential workers have faced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and what’s needed to protect workers now and into the future.

We know how to make things safe when we make safety a priority. But what has happened is we have not prioritized essential workers, even though they are doing essential work.

Randi Weingarten

American Federation of Teachers President

COVID-19 has shown us the necessity of essential workers in key sectors of labor, including healthcare, education and retail grocery. However, despite the impact laborers have had in ensuring that communities and society at large are safe, they face continued difficulties in ensuring that their rights and livelihoods are protected.

To explore the challenges and long-term shifts essential workers are likely to face post-pandemic, the 3rd Annual Labor Innovation & Technology Summit hosted Innovations & the Pandemic: What’s Next for Essential Workers on Feb. 19. Panelists included AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, National Nurses United Executive Director Bonnie Castillo, and the International President of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Mark Perrone. Moderating the panel was Politico Senior Editor and author of its Global Translations newsletter Ryan Heath.
