SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local Hosts Professional Development Workshops, Mixers for Performers

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has declared August as Actors Month in the county in appreciation of actors’ contributions to the culture and economy of the islands — and the SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local is celebrating all month long.

“Actors have played an integral role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of Honolulu,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Their performances have not only entertained us but have also brought global attention to our beautiful islands. From iconic TV characters to local stage performers, actors enrich our community and economy with their talent and dedication. I am proud to declare August as Actors Month in Honolulu to honor their significant contributions and celebrate the vibrant arts community that makes our city unique."

SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local President Andrea Sikkink said, “From Steve McGarrett to Thomas Magnum to hundreds of others, fictional characters have often served as ambassadors for the islands, drawing vacationers from around the world and helping to boost the local economy. But it’s the very real actors behind those characters whose charisma and dedication to their craft have turned them into memorable icons. Actors Month is a great way to honor their contributions. Thank you, Mayor Blangiardi.”

Sikkink also added, “The Hawaiian Islands are home to wonderfully diverse categories of actors, from those well-known stars of TV shows and blockbuster movies to those brightening our local stages and theaters, local and national commercials and voiceovers. All Hawaii actors are a vital part of our local entertainment industry and economy.”

The proclamation, which will be read at a ceremony at Honolulu City Hall on Aug. 12, notes that “[A]ctors and their performances enrich our lives in profound ways and meaningful ways … the Council and the Mayor recognize the impact the performing arts and acting has on our community, and supports actors and acting as a career, vocation or hobby.”

Throughout the month, the Local is hosting a variety of events benefitting local actors, including workshops, scene studies and mixers. For all the details, visit http://www.sagaftra.org/august-actors-month-hawaii-local.
