Young Performer Committee Holds Parent Informational Meetings

In an effort to resurrect the Young Performers Committee, we will be holding 2 brainstorming/informational meetings on Monday, May 13th at 1:00 pm and Monday, May 20th at 3:00 pm.  Parents need to only attend one or the other.  

The goal for these meetings is to create an agenda for the upcoming year for educational seminars and events for parents and Young Performers.  If you are unable to attend, but have ideas, and/or want to be included in future meetings, please contact Kathy.Byrne@sagaftra.org.

Acting Masterclass Workshop

Apr 11, 2024 - 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM CDT

Where: Online Via Zoom

The Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston-Austin Locals are offering our members a FREE live online Tom Todoroff masterclass workshop on Thursday, April 11, 6-9 p.m. CT. In this class, instruction is done by way of demonstration. So attendees may volunteer to perform a 1-2 minute monologue and receive personalized coaching in front of the group. Tom will coach several actors on their prepared pieces to demonstrate how to use Guideposts, Viewpoints, Vocal Variation and The Four Agreements to craft the most dynamic, compelling performance possible.

Attendees are also welcome to observe only. Time Allowing, Tom will answer questions from the group at the end.  

In this class, you'll learn about a clear, practical set of tools for text analysis and rehearsal that will allow you to feel relaxed, grounded and confident for every performance. This is also an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the film, tv and theater industry. RSVP today to save your place!

WHO IS TOM TODOROFF? Tom is a producer, director, actor and performance coach who has directed, coached and/or acted opposite Peter O’Toole, Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson, Sasha Alexander, Allison Janney, Tony Goldwyn, Claire Danes and Blythe Danner among others. Tom's background includes training at Juilliard in NYC and with Stella Adler as well as a 15-year working relationship with Michael Shurtleff (famed casting director & author of Audition). Tom's students range from the most accomplished TV, film and theater professionals, to passionate enthusiasts who are just beginning to explore the world of acting, directing and storytelling. New England Conservatory: Cold Reads

In this interactive cold read workshop a small group of participants will cold read scenes and obtain constructive and focused practical performance notes from their peers.

MPC and SAG-AFTRA New England Present: The Business of Acting

Join us for an engaging seminar on the journey of acting jobs, starting from the moment a casting agency receives a script to the actor’s arrival on set. We’ll discuss the process of how roles are booked, as well as offer practical tips for actors to secure parts, what to prepare when booking, and practical considerations to excel in their job experiences.

We’ll offer insights from the perspectives of a casting director, talent agent, and SAG-AFTRA representative with a 'behind the scenes' look into their roles to understand how each collaborates with a production to help bring the best talent to the screen for the story.

Our goal is to empower local talent with strategies and considerations for your next job. This seminar will also be useful for filmmakers and media producers looking for insights into the business of booking talent for their next project!

Virtual: Cynthia Bain's Signature Scene Study Class #1

This is a three week intensive course for performers under the age of 18 only.


You must be available for the following dates in order to take this class:

  • Wednesday, March 20 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm
  • Wednesday, April 3 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm
  • Wednesday, April 17 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm

Once you are registered for this initial prerequisite course on March 20, you will be automatically registered for the rest of the dates listed above.

This virtual three week course of Cynthia Bain's Young Actor Studio Signature Scene Study Acting Class for Young Performers is dedicated to nurturing the creative potential of aspiring actors by providing a supportive and enriching environment for them to explore and refine their craft. By taking a deep dive into script analysis and character analysis, they believe in empowering young performers to discover their unique voice, fostering a deep appreciation for the art of acting. With a focus on goal setting, positive achievements, and replacing can't with can - Cynthia Bain's Young Actor Studio instills confidence that extends beyond the stage. Their mission is to cultivate a community where passion meets skill, where collaboration thrives, and where each participant can learn professional acting and life skills in a safe, supportive environment.

New England Conservatory - Micro-Budget Agreement: A tool for your career

The SAG-AFTRA Micro-Budget Project Agreement provides a streamlined signatory process for independent producers who are creating a dramatic entertainment project with a budget of $20,000 or less per picture or per episode.

At this New England Conservatory, hear from local members who have produced their own content under the Micro-Budget and who have used the agreement to flip non-union jobs. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and learn how you can apply these tools to your own career.

The Actors Blueprint for Success

Join Shaan Sharma in a conservatory workshop on how to have a successful and sustainable career. In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Make money with your art in the business.
  • Fight for the value of your art in the marketplace. 
  • Take care of yourself so you can be reliable and consistent with the quality of your work. 
  • This fun, informal and interactive lecture will teach you about:
  • Optimizing every variable in your control to make your success inevitable and not a gamble.
  • On-camera craft and audition tips, how casting works, the online casting services, headshots, reels and branding.
  • Creating your own content.
  • Conquering nervousness and boosting confidence and so much more.

Directions: Attendees are welcome to bring materials to take notes. 

Parking: Limited street parking is available. Members are welcome to park at the Los Angeles Film School parking lot on Ivar Ave and Sunset Blvd. However, please note parking costs $15 due to the duration of the class.

We encourage attendees to carpool, use Uber/Lyft, or use public transportation.

Co-Star Audition Conservatory

Feb 10, 2024 - 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM MST

Join us for the Arizona-Utah Local’s TV Co-Star Audition Intensive Conservatory with Emmy-nominated L.A. Casting Director Jamie Castro, CSA, (Inventing Anna, Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, Friday Night Lights).

Co-star roles present their own unique challenges and are the gateway to larger TV roles. With Arizona’s new tax incentive in place, local actors will be getting more auditions for these types of roles and we want our talent to shine and book them!  

The workshop will last two hours and is fully on Zoom. The class is in three parts: 

  • Overview of co-star roles and tips and tricks for preparing for these auditions and roles.
  • Prepared read with redirects and notes for those who register and provide a headshot and resume by 9 a.m., Feb. 5.
  • Moderated Q&A.

This is a great class to strengthen your audition technique and practice in the remote live format - which is what many casting offices are currently using instead of in person.  All registrants are encouraged to join class from their self-tape set up.

Priority registration for Arizona-Utah Local members. Any remaining spots will open to other actors on Friday, February 2. There are no refunds. Upon registration you will be sent a link for payment. After payment is received you will be emailed instructions on where to send your headshot and resume along with the Zoom information.
