SAG-AFTRA Members,
When I was a boy, I fantasized about making hypothetical baseball trades that would overwhelmingly favor my beloved Dodgers.
I was always slightly disappointed when the real Dodgers made a trade that seemed they gave up too much to have won the dominating advantage in the deal.
Contract settlements are a lot like a hypothetical baseball trade. Despite clear gains, they always seem to be somewhat disappointing.
I’ve just finished reading the long version of the 129-page proposed agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP … it was a slog. The tedium I felt in reading the document (many passages required several re-reads) brought me two important realizations: One, is that I’m so glad that I’ve only played lawyers and never actually entertained becoming one. And two, what an enormous task our negotiating committee did for the rank-and-file members of our union.
Love or hate the result, no one can argue that an exorbitant amount of blood, sweat and tears went into this proposal. So, THANK YOU ALL for the herculean effort you displayed on our behalf.
Contract negotiations are tough, often mentally brutal and exhausting. It’s a battle. No side will EVER get everything they wanted or hoped for. That is the plain truth of every labor dispute. When all is said and done, if you come out of it with significant improvements, celebrate your victory.
That’s why I am voting YES on this hard-fought contract proposal.
