Dear Member,
As we are entering the last month of 2024, it has me both reflecting and looking forward. I’m extremely happy for the multiple Coffee Connection and Cold Reads events that we had throughout 2024. Many of our members came out to one or more, and were able to practice their craft, get immediate feedback from the agents and connect with fellow performers. Special thanks to the team at Productions Plus for hosting us!
On the broadcast front, contract discussions are underway with ownership groups Audacy and Bell Media. This is never an easy time for our members, but it’s a reminder that together we are stronger! With hard work from our broadcast staff and input from our shop stewards and members at each station, I am confident that the negotiations will reap future gains for our members. Union strong!
Many of our members have been extremely active in the push to bring film incentives back to Michigan. Currently the Multimedia Jobs Act is at the State House waiting for a vote. Our Legislature is currently in a lame duck session, and there are many competing interests for legislation to be discussed and voted on before they recess for the year. I am hopeful that it will be voted on (and voted up!) before the end of the year.
There is exciting news on the social media front! Our local now has its own Facebook page to help members stay current on local and national updates from the union. Please search “SAG-AFTRA Michigan Local” in Facebook (or click this link) and like and follow our page. Please encourage your fellow members to do the same so everyone can be informed in a timely manner about items affecting broadcast members and performers.
Finally, we have our annual Michigan Local membership meeting and holiday cocktail party on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Athletic Club. The board intends this to be a short meeting, with most of the time focused on mingling with fellow members and connecting on a personal level. We are also collecting items that evening for Alternatives for Girls to give back to those in need. It should be a great time and I’m hoping to see you that evening. Please RSVP here.
Wishing all of you an enjoyable holiday season and a prosperous and healthy 2025!
In unity,
Eric Wydra
Michigan Local President
