Dear Member,

Thank you to all our members who attended our New York Local Membership Meeting on May 13. So much has happened in the past year, and it was wonderful to recap what we have accomplished together, and we look forward to all that is to come for the members of our incredible union. When we show up for ourselves, we make this union — and this industry — work better for everyone. Of the many topics on your minds, two that came up frequently were self-tapes and A.I. To that end, I want to ensure you have access to the many resources available to help clarify some of the contract gains in these areas.

During the 2023 TV/Theatrical negotiations, SAG-AFTRA established meaningful protections for performers during the casting process. This includes provisions for self-tapes specifying that breakdowns, sides and/or scripts shall be provided no less than 48 hours prior to the submission deadline (excluding weekends and holidays). This is increased to 72 hours for minors. Also, talent may not be asked to perform more than eight industry-standard pages for a first self-tape or 12 industry-standard pages for a second or subsequent callback. You can read more about it in the TV/Theatrical/Streaming Self-Tape Contract Bulletin.

Similar protections were put in place earlier last year for members auditioning for low-budget projects. Information is available in the Low Budget Self-Tape Contract Bulletin.

We achieved hard-fought guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence in our work. Contract bulletins covering A.I. can be found here, including A.I. Background Basics, A.I. Consent, A.I. Digital Replicas, A.I. Principal Performer Basics, and A.I. Synthetic Performer vs. Digital Replicas

I encourage you to read all of the information available to familiarize yourself with what these new contract terms mean because an educated membership is a powerful membership!

Forward Together,

Ezra Knight
SAG-AFTRA New York Local President
