SAG-AFTRA Philadelphia Local broadcaster Glen Macnow can easily recall his first day at WIP-FM — December 6, 1993. His move from being a sportswriter with The Philadelphia Inquirer to radio meant joining what was then AFTRA.

“Unfortunately,” says Macnow about making the transition, “it was easier than it is now.”

Despite the uncertainty of the career move, radio was thriving at the time and Macnow has been a proud union member for 31 years.

Recognizing that times have changed, at least one similarity remains from the start of his career that Macnow would want to impress upon aspiring broadcasters: “Stand on the diving board, close your eyes, jump and just hope you hit water.”

Now that Macnow is set to retire in July, he is able to reflect on the role that SAG-AFTRA played throughout his career. He especially believes SAG-AFTRA’s benefits are terrific and will serve him well in retirement.

“I have been delighted over the years to be a member of a union that has a health plan that I had to rely on more than I would’ve hoped,” he said.“It’s the envy of a lot of industries.”

On behalf of the Philadelphia Local, we want to congratulate you on a fantastic career and wish you the best in retirement, Glen!
