A Message from New York Local President Ezra Knight

A little history: in America’s bicentennial year, 1976, February became Black History Month as an expasion of Negro History Week - a celebration initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson on February 1, 1926. After W.E.B. Dubois, Dr.Carter was the second African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard. Known as “The Father of Black History'' he dedicated his life and teachings to the study of African American life and history. This month of observance is his gift to our world.

Black History is American History. We celebrate those whose shoulders we stand upon, the many sacrifices, as well as the strides we’ve made and the work left to do. Therefore this month, and every month, provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge and confront the historical and systemic issues both within and outside our industry that still threaten true equality, and perpetuate an uneven playing field. As a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and a dedicated union leader I see it as an essential part of my mission to continue the fight for Equity and Inclusion. As the largest entertainment union in the world, it is said “our strength is in our diversity.” Now more than ever is the time to prove it. I am proud that SAG-AFTRA is striving to be a leader in affecting long-needed change. I hope you are too.

I know many of our NY members are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic and I want to make you aware of some available financial assistance opportunities.

Creatives Rebuild New York (CRNY) is a program that offers guaranteed income to artists across New York State who can demonstrate financial need. The program is currently accepting applications. According to their website, “CRNY will provide guaranteed income and employment opportunities for 2,700 artists whose primary residence is in New York State.”

The Actors Fund is excited to spread the word about new rent-stabilized, upscale apartments for moderate and middle-income households along the waterfront in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Through their lottery, you can apply now for apartments that are affordable for eligible households with a combined annual income between $51,463–$192,400. Sign up here and the Brookfield team will reach out with details about how to apply to live lotteries or send alerts once more open.

Separate from the Actors Fund opportunities, the 266 Kent Affordable Housing Lottery is also now open for “One South First” which is located on the Williamsburg waterfront.

And finally, don’t forget, the deadline for eligible voters to vote for your favorite performances at this year’s SAG Awards® is Friday, Feb. 25, 2022 at 3 p.m. ET (Noon PT). Get your votes in and don’t miss the ceremony being simulcast live Sunday, Feb. 27 on TNT & TBS.

Forward together,

Ezra Knight
