SAG-AFTRA presentation reviews new industry protocols on a safer return to work.
The SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement held a presentation titled A Return to Work: Putting Protocols into Practice on Sept. 25. The livestream, presented by Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, came days after the union announced that it had reached an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on a plan for a safer reopening of the industry.
On Aug. 4, the PTEOE presented Safety & Reopening: Getting Members Back to Work. The new session served as an update and detailed how safety protocols are now being put into place on AMPTP productions around the globe. The protocols are based on The Safe Way Forward, a 36-page document developed by SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, the DGA, Teamsters and the AMPTP.
Key to the agreed-upon protocols are testing, a new zone system and economic protections: paid sick leave and compensation for time spent in quarantine.
Crabtree-Ireland also reviewed the availability of personal protective equipment and oversight from an on-site COVID Compliance Supervisor. He also outlined safety protocols for auditions, travel, and hair, makeup and wardrobe.
“In everything that we’re doing, it’s about mitigating and reducing the risk of infection,” he said. “Every member has to make their own decision about what levels of risk they’re prepared to accept and whether it is the right time [for them] to return to work.”
The presentation included a Q&A session to answer member questions.
