After a difficult 2020 no one will miss, it’s encouraging that our situation seems to be improving. As pandemic numbers finally seem to be falling, it’s worth noting that the Nashville Local’s membership numbers actually rose. Due to a combination of new joins and transfers from other locals, we have moved up in our union classification to become one of SAG-AFTRA’s largest small locals. And hopefully, as virus numbers fall and vaccine numbers rise, we can all go back to work soon.
SAG-AFTRA’s new Micro-Budget Project Agreement will help us do that. It’s specifically designed for short projects and shows with budgets under $20,000. You only need to go online and register your project with the union and wait for approval, which usually comes within a matter of hours, and you’re ready to go! Now those 48- and 54-hour film projects and short form web series will be a snap. Learn more about it here.
We will be entering negotiations this year with the major record labels. Our Nashville contingent to the national negotiating committee is a strong and experienced group, and in the last negotiation, three years ago, they came away with historic gains. We honor their commitment on behalf of their union brothers and sisters and wish them well.
As we move cautiously into spring, I urge you to stay diligent. We’re almost there. Mask up and double down on distancing, get vaccinated when you can and ask for help if you need it. Here’s to a band in every bar, a set in every city and a play on every stage.
Stay safe in solidarity,
Mike Montgomery
Nashville Local President
