An update from Houston-Austin 2nd Vice President Liz R. Graham.
"Greetings, my union sisters and brothers! As the local SAG-AFTRA representative to the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, I’d like to update you on what’s being done, and pass along some helpful resource information.
"First up, the biggest news is that I have a meeting with Mayor Turner’s office next month! I’m going to ask him to make good on his campaign promise and bring film incentives to Houston. We all know that incentives bring more into the local economy than goes out, and with a seriously hurting economy, why not? All he can do is say no, right?
"I’m so excited about the new leadership development program that the AFL-CIO is launching this fall. It’s a 10-week program designed to help members develop skills essential for effective union leadership. Classes once a week with an outside project and mentor. Watch for it!
"Our Local Union Political Committee is keeping a close eye on the current Texas legislative session, while working nationally to get the PRO Act passed. The PRO Act would dramatically grow workers’ power on the job by expanding union membership, reforming decades-old labor laws, banning so-called “right-to-work” laws and ending employer intimidation or interference in union drives.
"Please go to passtheproact.org for more information, and join the fight for our rights!
"The local Area Labor Federation has a great website with lots of handy links related to COVID issues, including eviction protection, work safety, food resources, vaccine information and more. Go to gcaflcio.org to learn more about this and all of the good work being done by the Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation here in the greater Houston area. If you’d like to be a mentor or get involved with our leadership development program, or if you have questions, please contact me at houston@sagaftra.org."
