Vickie Thomas, a journalist and longtime SAG-AFTRA shop steward at WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit, will be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame on April 14. The induction celebrates Thomas’ nearly 30 years at WWJ, putting her in the company of some of the most well-known, prolific and talented journalists in the state.
As the station’s city beat reporter, she has covered almost every major story that has shaped Detroit’s past, present and future. In addition, Thomas has been a shop steward at WWJ since the station was organized by AFTRA in 1996. She is a tireless advocate for her co-workers and has been at the table for every collective bargaining agreement negotiation for more than two decades. She has also served on the SAG-AFTRA Broadcast Steering Committee.
Thomas has also been a leader of the National Association of Black Journalists, on both a local and national scale. As Region II director, she was the driving force behind the selection of Detroit as the host city for the NABJ National Convention in 2018.
With her hard work and dedication, Thomas has won numerous awards from the NABJ, Associated Press, Michigan Association of Broadcasters and Detroit Press Foundation, and she can now add “hall of fame inductee” to the list. Congratulations, Vickie!
