SAG-AFTRA Broadcasters Sweep 2015 Regional Murrow Awards

SAG-AFTRA broadcast shops from the Seattle and Portland Locals made a clean sweep in the Television, Large Market News category in the 2015 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.

Seattle’s KING-TV was the big winner in the Region 1 division, covering Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, garnering 10 of the 13 awards, including Overall Excellence, in addition to taking honors for Breaking News, Continuing Coverage, Investigative Reporting, News Documentary, News Series, Hard and Sports News Reporting, and Use of Sound/Video. In addition, KING reporter John Sharify was cited in the Writing category for his ongoing feature series Sharify’s Stories.

In addition, Portland shop KGW-TV took home awards in the Feature Reporting and Outstanding Website categories, while Seattle’s KOMO-TV received the Outstanding Newscast Award for their coverage of the 2014 Oso, Wash. landslide.

In the Large Market Radio Category, KPLU-FM took the award for Best Feature Reporting for Gabriel Spitzer’s story of a 22-year-old cancer patient and the unlikely relationship she develops with a 3-year-old girl undergoing chemotherapy.

The awards, presented annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), recognize “outstanding achievements in electronic journalism” and qualify regional recipients for the National Edward R. Murrow Awards competition, with the winners to be announced later this year. A complete list of Region 1 winners can be viewed at the RTDNA’s website.

Named in honor of pioneering radio and television news broadcaster (and Washington State University graduate) Edward R. Murrow, the annual Murrow Awards have been presented by the RTDNA since 1971, in recognition of “Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism…Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession,” according to the association’s website. The SAG-AFTRA Seattle and Portland Locals congratulate all the regional winners and wishes them the best in the next round.
