SAG-AFTRA broadcasters talk about artificial intelligence in the newsroom and beyond.
As part of the 2024 NLGJA: Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists Convention, SAG-AFTRA hosted a panel titled Leading the Way on A.I., Protecting Content Creators: A SAG-AFTRA Perspective on Sept. 6. Speakers on the panel included SAG-AFTRA Vice President, Los Angeles and Los Angeles Local President Jodi Long; KPBS San Diego Metro Reporter Andrew Bowen; Interactive Media Agreement Negotiating Committee Chair Sarah Elmaleh; and National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, with KCRW Santa Monica Reporter & Digital News Reporter Danielle Chiriguayo moderating.
The panelists conversed about the proliferation of artificial intelligence in media and its impact on the work of broadcasters. Also discussed was the union’s recent work toward addressing the use of A.I. in entertainment and media, including its ongoing support of key legislation such as the Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe, or NO FAKES, Act and California AB 1836. AB 1836 has now been signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 16.
The NLGJA is a journalist-led association working to advance fair and accurate coverage of LGBTQ+ communities and issues in news media. Its 2024 convention took place Sept. 5–8 in Los Angeles.
