SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local Mourns Passing of President Glenn Cannon

The SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local mourns the passing of Glenn Cannon on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Cannon, who, for more than 20 years, served as president and board member of the former Screen Actors Guild Hawaii Branch and as current co-president of the SAG-AFTRA Hawaii Local. Born in Philadelphia, Cannon joined the union in the 1950s when he began his career in New York, acting in A Moon for the Misbegotten and The Good Woman of Setzuan on Broadway, as well as numerous off-Broadway and touring productions, including The Threepenny Opera and West Side Story. His career soon encompassed film and television work such as Cop Hater, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Combat!, Johnny Staccato, and The Outer Limits. At Stanford University, Cannon was an actor/director/teacher with the Stanford Repertory Theatre, an Equity company of nine actors supplemented by students in Stanford's theater program. Cannon was hired in 1968 by the University of Hawaii as a professor in the drama department, where he would remain throughout his life. During the past 45 years, he directed more than 100 shows and performed in countless stage productions in Hawaii. His most notable television role as District Attorney John Manicote on the original Hawaii Five-0 was followed by several seasons on Magnum, P.I. as Dr. Ibold. He’s touched many actors’ lives as a teacher, director and fellow actor.
 
“He had such a vital presence that would fill the room,” said Becky Maltby long-time friend and Hawaii Local Board member. “The passion and integrity he put into his work was unrivaled. A brilliant, funny, compassionate, noble man. He will be profoundly missed by so many.”
 
Cannon is survived by his wife Samsil Cannon and son Caleb.
