The more that you have studied and prepared [for your audition], the more specific you’re going to be during your performance and the less self-conscious you’re going to be.

Auditioning has changed over the last few years, and actors often wonder how they can make their self-tape or in-person audition stand out. But even with industrywide shifts, what leaves an impression on casting directors and productions aren’t flashy performances, but those that showcase an understanding of the character or role through subtle, specific actions.

The SAG-AFTRA podcast rebroadcasts the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement March 14 webinar, The Art of Specificity: An Actor’s Guide. Actor and acting coach Michael D. Cohen shares his insights on the art of "specificity" for acting auditions and improving your performance. He discusses insightful topics such as actor agenda vs. character agenda and knowing the character’s “dream of dreams,” and offers helpful tips for self-taped auditions.

Introduction by SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.
