Deepfakes and digital replicas targets of new NO A.I. FRAUDS and NO FAKES acts.

When you’re talking about federal legislation, it’s always going to be a difficult and arduous process. But now we have a culture that understands what it means when [artificial intelligence] exists. Everyone has probably seen some example of a deepfake or digital replica. Everyone now understands and sees the need for something to be done. That’s undeniable.

Jeffrey Bennett

SAG-AFTRA General Counsel

Over the last few years, states around the country have introduced legislation to curb unauthorized and abusive uses of artificial intelligence. More recently, Congress has introduced two legislative pieces, the NO A.I. FRAUDS and NO FAKES acts, designed to strengthen image and voice likeness protections. Both acts have been lauded by the union, which has pledged its support.

But what are the larger implications of these two bills and others to come? SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and General Counsel Jeffery Bennett explore this question in this podcast episode. Together, they dive into what this legislation seeks to accomplish, how it stands to benefit and aid performers and other public figures, and what such laws mean for society’s future.
