Subject-matter experts weigh in on the importance of federal legislation that preserves human artistry.
It’s only since the 1700s that we have copyright laws that assign ownership to individual artists. … But that doesn’t change the fact that our society now values art as a way of getting to the human experience and working through a person’s lived-in experience, and, to me, that makes art more about the process than the outcome, and generative A.I. flips that on its head … A.I. just can’t do that.

On April 30, the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Intellectual Property will hold a hearing on the Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe, or NO FAKES, Act. The bipartisan proposal, if passed, would give federal protection to all people’s voices, images and likenesses from unauthorized recreations from generative A.I.
In this episode, host and SAG AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland is joined by Dr. Moiya McTier, senior advisor to the Human Artistry Campaign, and the Recording Industry Association of America Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mitch Glazier, a former senior House Judiciary Committee staffer. The trio discusses a large range of topics focused on the importance of preserving human artistry, including the balance between A.I. innovation and intellectual property rights, and the necessity of a regulatory framework that both empowers artists and fosters responsible technological advancement.
SAG-AFTRA’s endorsement of the NO FAKES Act is part of the union’s continued commitment to support legislation that protects its membership. For more information, visit sagaftra.org/gapp.
