SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White interview actor and member Riz Ahmed in the latest episode of the podcast.
You’re never sure what the next step is in life and how the cards may fall, so to some extent, there’s no planning the journeys we end up taking. … But one of the great privileges we have as actors is to learn when we take on a role, and I think that’s always driven me.
Riz Ahmed
Actor
When thinking about emerging Hollywood talent, it’s nearly impossible to overlook British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed. The SAG Awards®-nominated performer’s career has grown from independent projects to hit television shows such as Girls (2012–2017) and The Night Of (2017) to blockbusters such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Yet, in true multihyphenate fashion, he is also a writer, producer and activist, and raps under the stage name Riz MC. His latest film, Sound of Metal, in which he plays Ruben, a punk-rock drummer coping with rapid intermittent hearing loss, is the latest showcase of his talent and prowess.
In this episode of the podcast, hosts SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White interview Ahmed, who discusses his journey from Oxford University to an acting career, how he prepared for Sound of Metal and how his “hunger to engage in the world” fuels a passion for all aspects of his work.
