SAG-AFTRA’s Kerri Wood Einertson explains the benefits of the California Film & Television Tax Credit Program.

On Dec. 11, the California for the Arts non-profit hosted its virtual webinar, The State of Funding and Legislation for Arts, Culture & Creativity in California. Among the webinar speakers was SAG-AFTRA Executive Director, Government Affairs & Public Policy Kerri Wood Einertson. Wood Einertson, who is also a member of the California Film Commission, talked about the California Film & Television Tax Credit Program, a longtime benefit integral to the production of film and episodic television series in the state.

In her presentation, Wood Einertson gave an overview of the program’s positive impact on the California film industry and state economy. In addition to its discussion of the continued benefits of the tax credit on auxiliary and local businesses, attendees were presented a statistical analysis of the state’s viability as a film location nationally and internationally, and given details regarding California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent announcement to expand the program.

“In October, the Governor announced his proposal to expand the program from $330 million to $750 million annually. This more than doubles the program, which we need [and] we are extremely excited about,” said Wood Einertson. “This is a huge boost that we need in order to be competitive not just to other states but other countries. So, this is a really important move for California.”

Other presenters included Julie Baker, CA for the Arts/CA Arts Advocates chief executive officer; Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck Policy Advisor Alex Torres; and Shaw Yoder Antwih Schmelzer & Lange Legislative Advocate Priscilla Quiroz.

CA for the Arts is a state agency advocating for policies that lend support to the arts and culture sector.
